From Multimedia Retrieval to Knowledge Management ( Pedro J. Moreno, J.M. Van Thong, Beth Logan, Gareth J.F. Jones ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2002-04)

- Despite recent advances, multimedia use in knowledge management remains largely limited to retrieval systems. Multimedia data introduces several challenges to KM systems, including the uncertainties associated with media analyzers and the need for good scalability and effective user interfaces. Architectures capable of handling system complexity will also play a crucial role in deploying multimedia-based KM solutions. The prospects for fully exploiting multimedia content are promising. Given current trends in audio and video analysis, multimedia storage and distribution over the Internet, developments in XML representations, and integration with knowledge portals, the authors expect multimedia data to become truly pervasive.

Using Coplink to Analyze Criminal-Justice Data ( Roslin V. Hauck, Homa Atabakhsh, Pichai Ongvasith, Harsh Gupta, Hsinchun Chen ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2002-03)

- In criminal justice systems, incompatible content and information formats often create barriers to data accessand utilization that make knowledgemanagement a complex and daunting process. To address these problems, the authors undertook the Coplink project, which bridges the gap between conducting technology research and helping police officers fight crime.University of Arizona researchers originally generated the concept space approach to facilitate semantic retrieval of information. Although Coplink's current incarnation demonstrates its potential as a tool for enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement, new technologies will provide opportunities for making the system even more useful.Meanwhile, several user studies have shown that this system also improves searching and browsing in the engineering and biomedicine domains.

The Interspace: Concept Navigation Across Distributed Communities ( Bruce R. Schatz ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2002-01)

- With the Interspace, the global information infrastructure will, for the first time, directly support interaction with abstraction. This infrastructure uses technologies that go beyond searching individual repositories to analyze and correlate knowledge across multiple sources and subjects. The Interspace will offer distributed services to transfer concepts across domains, just as Arpanet used distributed services to transfer files across machines and the Internet uses distributed services to transfer objects across repositories. Standard protocols for the emerging information infrastructure will support searching knowledge collections maintained and indexed by specialized communities and residing directly on users' personal machines. These protocols will automatically interconnect related logical spaces, letting individuals navigate across community repositories rather than searching for interlinked objects within physical networks. The Community Architectures for Network Information Systems Laboratory has developed a working Interspace prototype that uses scalable technologies for concept extraction and navigation. They have successfully tested these technologies, which compute contextual frequency of document phrases within community repository, on discipline-scale, real-world collections. Within the next decade, semantic indexing will extend beyond concepts and categories to perspectives, which relate concepts within categories, and situations, which relate categories within collections. These more abstract semantic levels will lead to a closer matching of the meanings in the user's mind to the world's objects.

Toward Zero-Effort Personal Document Management ( Jonathan J. Hull, Peter E. Hart ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-03)

- Integrating document capture into daily work practices and exploiting familiar retrieval methods are the keys to Save everything!—a radically new approach to personal document management.

Visualizing a Knowledge Domain's Intellectual Structure ( Chaomei Chen, Ray J. Paul ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-03)

- To make knowledge visualizations clear and easy to interpret, we have developed a method that extends and transforms traditional author co-citation analysis by extracting structural patterns from the scientific literature and representing them in a 3D knowledge landscape.

Knowledge Management: Ready for Prime Time? ( George Lawton ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-02)

Persistence of Web References in Scientific Research ( Steve Lawrence, David M. Pennock, Gary William Flake, Robert Krovetz, Frans M. Coetzee, Eric Glover, Finn Årup Nielsen, Andries Kruger, C. Lee Giles ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-02)

- The lack of persistence of Web references has called into question the increasingly common practice of citing URLs in scientific papers. Although few critical resources have been lost to date, new strategies to manage Internet resources and improved citation practices are necessary to minimize the future loss of information.

The KWIC and the Dead: A Lesson in Computing History ( Neville Holmes ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-01)

- Ideas published decades ago may suggest solutions to some of today's most pressing technological and social challenges.

Obelix Searches Internet Using Customer Data ( Veljko Milutinovic, Predrag Knezevic, Bozidar Radunovic, Steve Casselman, John Schewel ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2000-07)

- Reconfigurable chips allow user-tailored Internet searches. The first step is collecting customer data. After that, the search engine leads the way.

Keeping Up with the Changing Web ( Brian E. Brewington, George Cybenko ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2000-05)

- Most information depreciates over time, so keeping Web pages current presents new design challenges. This article quantifies what "current" means for Web search engines and estimates how often they must reindex the Web to keep current with its changing pages and structure.

Defining the Web: The Politics of Search Engines ( Lucas Introna, Helen Nissenbaum ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2000-01)

- Manipulated by the wealthy and the technologically adept, search engines may be presenting an increasingly distorted and limited view of the Web.

Directories Don't Get No Respect ( Ted Lewis ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-12)

The Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge ( Pierre Bourque, Robert Dupuis, Alain Abran, James W. Moore, Leonard Tripp ; IEEE Software Magazine 1999-11)

- Reporting on the SWEBOK project, the authors—who represent the project's editorial team—discuss the three-phase plan to characterize a body of knowledge, a vital step toward developing software engineering as a profession.

Mining the Web's Link Structure ( Soumen Chakrabarti, Byron E. Dom, S. Ravi Kumar, Prabhakar Raghavan, Sridhar Rajagopalan, Andrew Tomkins, David Gibson, Jon Kleinberg ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-08)

- Sifting through the growing mountain of Web data demands an increasingly discerning search engine, one that can reliably assess the quality of sites, not just their relevance.

Interactive Data Analysis: The Control Project ( Joseph M. Hellerstein, Ron Avnur, Andy Chou, Christian Hidber, Chris Olston, Vijayshankar Raman, Tali Roth, Peter J. Haas ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-08)

- Human insight is crucial for extracting meaning out of massive data sets, yet current user interactions with databases don't allow iterative, intuitive analysis. The Control project looks at ways to give users quicker, more direct interactivity with the data.

Data Mining-Guest Editors' Introduction: From Serendipity to Science ( Naren Ramakrishnan, Ananth Y. Grama ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-08)

- Serendipity refers to making fortunate discoveries quite by accident, so transitioning to a science might seem like an inherently difficult task. But that is just what modern data mining hopes to accomplish.

Mining Very Large Databases ( Venkatesh Ganti, Johannes Gehrke, Raghu Ramakrishnan ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-08)

- The explosive growth of databases makes the scalability of data-mining techniques increasingly important. The authors describe algorithms that address three classical data-mining problems.

Constraint-Based, Multidimensional Data Mining ( Jiawei Han, Laks V.S. Lakshmanan, Raymond T. Ng ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-08)

- Integrating both constraint-based and multidimensional mining into one framework provides an interactive, exploratory environment for effective and efficient data analysis and mining.

Digital Libraries and Autonomous Citation Indexing ( Steve Lawrence, C. Lee Giles, Kurt Bollacker ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-06)

- Scientific literature on the Web is largely disorganized. Autonomous citation indexing can help organize the literature by automating the construction of citation indices. ACI aims to improve the dissemination and retrieval of scientific literature.
