GPS: Location-Tracking Technology ( Rashmi Bajaj, Samantha Lalinda Ranaweera, Dharma P. Agrawal ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2002-04)

Simics: A Full System Simulation Platform ( Peter S. Magnusson, Magnus Christensson, Jesper Eskilson, Daniel Forsgren, Gustav Hållberg, Johan Högberg, Fredrik Larsson, Andreas Moestedt, Bengt Werner ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2002-02)

- Full system simulation seeks to strike a balance between accuracy and performance. Many of its possibilities have been obvious to practitioners in both academia and industry for quite some time, perhaps decades, but Simics supports more of these possibilities within a single framework than other tools do. Simics is a platform for full system simulation that can run actual firmware and completely unmodified kernel and driver code. It is sufficiently abstract to achieve tolerable performance levels, and it provides both functional accuracy for running commercial workloads and sufficient timing accuracy to interface to detailed hardware models. Simics can also run a heterogeneous network of systems from different vendors within the same framework. Exceptionally fast, Simics can easily add new components and leverage older ones within a practical abstraction level. It offers a platform with a rich API and a powerful scripting environment for use in a broad range of applications.

Interactive Analysis of Computer Crimes ( Donald E. Brown, Louise E. Gunderson, Marc H. Evans ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2000-08)

- Crime analysis is a critical component of modern policing, and law enforcement agencies are increasingly using computerized analysis tools. A system developed at the University of Virginia adapts computerized techniques created for analyzing conventional crimes for use by law enforcement agencies in the Internet age.

Collaboratories: Doing Science on the Internet ( Richard T. Kouzes, James D. Myers, William A. Wulf ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1996-08)

- The success of many complex scientific investigations hinges on bringing the capabilities of diverse individuals from multiple institutions together with state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Simulation TC: Active and vibrant ( Anup Kumar, Adel S. Elmaghraby ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1996-01)

Event Reconstruction in High-Energy Physics ( Frank J. Rinaldo, Matthew R. Fausey ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-06)

- Cooperative Processes Software (CPS), a parallel programming toolkit developed at Fermilab for processing CPU-intensive experimental data in the area of high-energy physics, is described. CPS allows physicists to solve computationally intensive problems on a collection of reduced-instruction-set-computer (RISC) workstations that work in parallel to provide solutions within a reasonable time frame. This mode of parallel processing provides a cost effective and easily scalable solution to CPU-bound computational problems that can be classified as large grained and loosely coupled. The performance of CPS on a typical experiment of Fermilab, which has 1000 to 2000 8 mm tapes of raw event data that needs to be reconstructed, is discussed.

Visualizing Fluid Flow ( ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-06)

- Several techniques for 3D visualization of fluid flow are discussed. Particle insertion into flow, particle-rendering, isosurface generation, volume rendering, data probing, and specialized analysis and visualization methods are described.

Acquisition and Representation of 2D and 3D Data from Turbulent Flows and Flames ( Marshall B. Long, Kevin Lyons, Joseph K. Lam ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-08)

- Laser light scattering techniques for making two- and three-dimensional measurements in turbulent flows and flames are outlined, and examples of data representations are shown. Limitations and problems in displaying data are discussed.
