Developing a Generic Augmented-Reality Interface ( Ivan Poupyrev, Desney S. Tan, Mark Billinghurst, Hirokazu Kato, Holger Regenbrecht, Nobuji Tetsutani ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2002-03)
- - An augmented-reality interface dynamically superimposes interactive computer graphics images onto objects in the real world. Although researchers and developers have made great advances in display and tracking technologies, to date interaction with these environments has been largely limited to passive viewing or simple browsing of virtual information registered to the real world. The authors designed Tiles as a first step toward overcoming these limitations by allowing effective spatial composition, layout, and arrangement of digital objects in the physical environment. Tiles users can freely place interface elements anywhere they want: on tables or whiteboards, inboxes and folders, arranged in stacks, or grouped together. The interface configuration and layout of Tiles' elements emerges spontaneously as the result of users' workactivity and evolves together with it.
Aria: An Agent for Annotating and Retrieving Images ( Henry Lieberman, Elizabeth Rozenweig, Push Singh ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-07)
- - Although modern photography has come a long way, the process of making and using photographs still requires more effort than it should. Using software agents rather than human labor can help reduce some of this tedium.Aria is an interface agent designed to assist users by proactively looking for opportunities for image annotation and retrieval. Although it doesn't completely automate image annotation and retrieval, Aria dramatically reduces user interface overhead, which can lead to better-annotated image libraries and fewer missed opportunities for image use.The authors designed Aria's interface agent to facilitate--rather than fully automate--the textual annotation and retrieval process. The agent's role lies not so much in automatically performing the annotation and retrieval but in detecting opportunities for performing these functions and alerting the user to those opportunities. The agent can also, when appropriate, help the user complete the operations.Future work will center on taking advantage of more opportunities to use context to determine appropriate situations for image annotation, image library browsing, and retrieval. The authors are often asked how their approach will scale to large image collections. Keywords could relate to ontologies and knowledge bases to do inheritance or simple inference searches. Aria's retrieval technology treats image sets as an unstructured database, but perhaps a better method would be to look at sets of pictures as linked networks. In the long run, the authors seek to capture and use commonsense knowledge about typical picture- taking situations.
The Convergence of Graphics and Vision ( Jed Lengyel ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1998-07)
- - Approaching similar problems from opposite directions, graphics and vision researchers are reaching a fertile middle ground. The goal is to find the best possible tools for the imagination. This overview describes cutting-edge work, some of which will debut at Siggraph 98.
Machine Vision Technology for the Forest Products Industry ( Richard W. Conners, D. Earl Kline, Philip A. Araman, Thomas H. Drayer ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1997-07)
- - From forest to finished product, wood is moved from one processing stage to the next, subject to the decisions of individuals along the way. While this process has worked for hundreds of years, the technology exists today to provide more complete information to the decision makers. Virginia Tech has developed this technology, creating a machine vision prototype for wood products manufacturing.
Vision-Based Vehicle Guidance ( Massimo Bertozzi, Alberto Broggi ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1997-07)
- - This implementation of lane and obstacle detection for an autonomous, self-guided vehicle succeeds by tailoring vision and computational techniques to an affordable SIMD architecture.
Chabot: Retrieval from a Relational Database of Images ( Virginia E. Ogle, Michael Stonebraker ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1995-09)
- - Selecting from a large, expanding collection of images requires carefully chosen search criteria. Here’s an approach that integrates a relational database retrieval system with a color analysis technique.
Similar-Shape Retrieval In Shape Data Management ( Rajiv Mehrotra, James E. Gary ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1995-09)
- - A new similar-shape retrieval system effectively models real-world applications. It is flexible enough to handle rigid or articulated shapes and simple or complex query images.
Real-Time Image Processing on a Custom Computing Platform ( Peter M. Athanas, A. Lynn Abbott ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1995-02)
- - The authors explore the utility of custom computing machinery for accelerating the development, testing, and prototyping of a diverse set of image-processing applications.
Visualizing Features and Tracking Their Evolution ( Ravi Samtaney, Deborah Silver, Norman Zabusky, Jim Cao ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1994-07)
- - We describe basic algorithms to extract coherent amorphous regions (features or objects) from 2 and 3D scalar and vector fields and then track them in a series of consecutive time steps. We use a combination of techniques from computer vision, image processing, computer graphics, and computational geometry and apply them to data sets from computational fluid dynamics. We demonstrate how these techniques can reduce visual clutter and provide the first step to quantifying observable phenomena. These results can be generalized to other disciplines with continuous time-dependent scalar (and vector) fields.
Example-Based Graphical Database Query Languages ( Gültekin Özsoyoglu, Huaqing Wang ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1993-05)
- - Several user-friendly graphical database query languages that let users formulate a query by specifying a graphically aided example on the screen are compared. One of the earliest such languages, M.M. Zloof's (1977) Query-by-Example, is described. Other languages discussed are Aggregates-by-Example, Summary-Table-by-Example, and Query-by-Statistical-Relational-Table for statistical and scientific databases; Time-by-Example for historical databases; Generalized-Query-by-Example for relational, network, and hierarchical databases; Office-by-Example, Formanager, the Natural Forms Query Language, and System-for-Business-Automation for office environments; and Picquery and Query-by-Pictorial-Example for pictorial (image) databases. The basic features, query specification and interpretation, object manipulation, query language constructs, and query processing techniques used in each of the languages are discussed.
Reading Handwritten Digits: A ZIP Code Recognition System ( Ofer Matan, Henry S. Baird, Jane Bromley, Christopher J.C. Burges, John S. Denker, Lawrence D. Jackel, Yann Le Cun, Edwin P.D. Pednault, William D. Satterfield, Charles E. Stenard, Timothy J. Thompson ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-07)
- - A neural network algorithm-based system that reads handwritten ZIP codes appearing on real US mail is described. The system uses a recognition-based segmenter, that is a hybrid of connected-components analysis (CCA), vertical cuts, and a neural network recognizer. Connected components that are single digits are handled by CCA. CCs that are combined or dissected digits are handled by the vertical-cut segmenter. The four main stages of processing are preprocessing, in which noise is removed and the digits are deslanted, CCA segmentation and recognition, vertical-cut-point estimation and segmentation, and directly lookup. The system was trained and tested on approximately 10000 images, five- and nine-digit ZIP code fields taken from real mail.
A Prototype Document Image Analysis System for Technical Journals ( George Nagy, Sharad Seth, Mahesh Viswanathan ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-07)
- - Gobbledoc, a system providing remote access to stored documents, which is based on syntactic document analysis and optical character recognition (OCR), is discussed. In Gobbledoc, image processing, document analysis, and OCR operations take place in batch mode when the documents are acquired. The document image acquisition process and the knowledge base that must be entered into the system to process a family of page images are described. The process by which the X-Y tree data structure converts a 2-D page-segmentation problem into a series of 1-D string-parsing problems that can be tackled using conventional compiler tools is also described. Syntactic analysis is used in Gobbledoc to divide each page into labeled rectangular blocks. Blocks labeled text are converted by OCR to obtain a secondary (ASCII) document representation. Since such symbolic files are better suited for computerized search than for human access to the document content and because too many visual layout clues are lost in the OCR process (including some special characters), Gobbledoc preserves the original block images for human browsing. Storage, networking, and display issues specific to document images are also discussed.
Information Encoding with Two-Dimensional Bar Codes ( Theo Pavlidis, Jerome Swartz, Ynjiun P. Wang ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-06)
- - Various schemes proposed for storing more information in the bar code label are reviewed. The concept of information density is introduced. The constraints imposed by the reading technology are addressed, and various recently proposed stacked bar codes are surveyed. Certain non-bar-code solutions are discussed.
Guest Editor's Introduction: Parallel Processing for Computer Vision and Image Understanding ( Alok Choudhary, Sanjay Ranka ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-02)
- - No abstract available.
Image Understanding Architecture: Exploiting Potential Parallelism in Machine Vision ( Charles C. Weems, Edward M. Riseman, Allen R. Hanson, P.J. Narayanan, Ling Tony Chen, Larry S. Davis, Leah H. Jamieson, Edward J. Delp, Chao-Chun Wang, Juan Li, Frank J. Weil ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-02)
- - A hardware architecture that addresses at least part of the potential parallelism in each of the three levels of vision abstraction, low (sensory), intermediate (symbolic), and high (knowledge-based), is described. The machine, called the image understanding architecture (IUA), consists of three different, tightly coupled parallel processors; the content addressable array parallel processor (CAAPP) at the low level, the intermediate communication associative processor (ICAP) at the intermediate level, and the symbolic processing array (SPA) at the high level. The CAAPP and ICAP levels are controlled by an array control unit (ACU) that takes its directions from the SPA level. The SPA is a multiple-instruction multiple-data (MIMD) parallel processor, while the intermediate and low levels operat in multiple modes. The CAAPP operates in single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) associative or multiassociative mode, and the ICAP operates in single-program multiple-data (SPMD) or MIMD mode.
Steps Toward Architecture-Independent Image Processing ( Jon A. Webb ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-02)
- - Adapt, an architecture-independent language based on the split-and-merge model, is presented. It is specialized for efficient, parallel computation of image-processing algorithms. The split-and-merge programming model is first examined. The Adapt language and its implementation are then described, and its performance is considered.
ISR: A Database for Symbolic Processing in Computer Vision ( John Brolio, Bruce A. Draper, J. Ross Beveridge, Allen R. Hanson ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-12)
- - ISR (international symbolic representation), a representation and management system for use at the intermediate (symbolic) level of vision, is described. ISR mediates access to intermediate-level vision data and forms an active interface to the higher-level inference processes that construct an image's interpretation. The system supports important types of data and operations and can be adapted to the changing needs of ongoing research. It provides a centralized data representation that supports integration of results from multiple avenues of research into the overall vision system. ISR's underlying computational paradigm is explained, database requirements for image interpretation are identified, the ISR data management system is described, and the use of ISR is discussed.
An Object Model for Image Recognition ( H.V. Jagadish, Lawrence O'Gorman ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-12)
- - The use of object-oriented database principles to help model an image for computer vision, specifically, for line-image analysis, is described. The resulting representation, called thin line code (TLC), is general across known applications and extensible to new applications. TLC's advantages, and also some difficulties it has in strictly adhering to traditional notions of object orientation, are addressed. A review of relevant aspects of object modeling is included.
Knowledge-Based Computer Vision-Integrated Programming Language and Data Management System Design ( Andrew M. Goodman, Robert M. Haralick, Linda G. Shapiro ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-12)
- - Properties that are needed in a language for programming computer vision tasks are described, and a new object-oriented programming language and data management system approach is suggested. An example from automatic pose estimation is used to illustrate the necessity for the properties in a language system, it is indicated where other languages and data management systems fail to provide these properties, and the type constructors used in the authors' system and features of the language semantics of their system are discussed.
