Articles: Showing

Simplifying Data Access: The Energy Data Collection Project ( José Luis Ambite, Yigal Arens, Eduard Hovy, Andrew Philpot, Luis Gravano, Vasileios Hatzivassiloglou, Judith Klavans ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-02)

- Using technology developed at the Digital Government Research Center, a team of researchers seeks to make government statistical data more accessible through the Internet.

Designing Innovative Reading Experiences for a Museum Exhibition ( Maribeth Back, Rich Gold, Anne Balsamo, Mark Chow, Matt Gorbet, Steve Harrison, Dale MacDonald, Scott Minneman ; IEEE Computer Magazine 2001-01)

- Rather than eliminating reading as many fear, digital technology actually facilitates a wide array of exciting and unusual reading experiences. A research team at Xerox PARC has created a museum exhibition that provides a glimpse into the future of reading forms and how we will interact with them.

As We May Read: The Reading Appliance Revolution ( Bill N. Schilit, Morgan N. Price, Gene Golovchinsky, Kei Tanaka, Catherine C. Marshall ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1999-01)

- Reading appliances allow people to work on electronic documents much as they would on paper. They therefore provide an alternative to the standard "browse or search and then print" model of reading online. By integrating a wide variety of document activities, such as searching, organizing, and skimming, and by allowing fluid movement among them, reading appliances eliminate disruptive transitions between paper and digital media.

Knowledge Elicitation for Authoring Patent Claims ( Svetlana Sheremetyeva, Sergei Nirenburg ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1996-07)

- Interactive elicitation techniques let us readily acquire knowledge about different domains. When these techniques are coupled with text generation, we can ultimately simplify text composition tasks faced by all sorts of professionals.

Creating the Paperless Office ( Rick Shetterly, Alan Chmura ; IEEE Software Magazine 1996-03)

- Taking the guesswork out of tool selection.

Flexible Text Display with Lector ( Darrell R. Raymond ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-08)

- Lector, an X11 application for flexible text interaction, is described. Lector was originally devised as a simple, rapid formatter for the display of online text databases. It was then discovered that Lector exhibited useful capabilities for a wide range of text applications. The ways in which Lector distinguishes between content and tags in descriptively marked-up text and achieves flexible interaction are discussed. Its applications as a text previewer, database browser, code prettyprinter, and menu utility are also discussed.

From Paper to Office Document Standard Representation ( Andreas Dengel, Rainer Bleisinger, Rainer Hoch, Frank Fein, Frank Hönes ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1992-07)

- The principles of the model-based document analysis system called Pi ODA (paper interface to office document architecture), which was developed as a prototype for the analysis of single-sided business letters in German, are presented. Initially, Pi ODA extracts a part-of hierarchy of nested layout objects such as text-blocks, lines, and words based on their presentation on the page. Subsequently, in a step called logical labeling, the layout objects and their compositions are geometrically analyzed to identify corresponding logical objects that can be related to a human perceptible meaning, such as sender, recipient, and date in a letter. A context-sensitive text recognition for logical objects is then applied using logical vocabularies and syntactic knowledge. As a result, Pi ODA produces a document representation that conforms to the ODA international standard.

The Task of the Referee ( Alan Jay Smith ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1990-04)

- Computer researchers have a professional obligation to referee the work of others. This article tells you how to evaluate a paper and write a report using common standards and procedures. It focuses on research papers in applied areas of computer science and engineering, such as systems architecture, hardware, communications, and performance evaluation, but most of the discussion is generally applicable; separate sections consider research proposals and survey and tutorial papers.

The Xerox Star: A Retrospective ( Jeff Johnson, Teresa L. Roberts, William Verplank, David C. Smith, Charles Irby, Marian Beard, Kevin Mackey ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1989-09)

- A description is given of the Xerox 8010 Star information system, which was designed as an office automation system. The idea was that professionals in a business or organization would have workstations on their desks and would use them to produce, retrieve, distribute, and organize documentation, presentations, memos, and reports. All of the workstations in an organization would be connected via Ethernet and would share access to file servers, printers, etc. The distinctive features of Star are identified, and changes to the original design are examined. A history of Star development is included. Some lessons learned from designing Star are related.

Multiple Representation Document Development ( Pehong Chen, Michael A. Harrison ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1988-01)

- The authors review a large number of document development systems for both text and graphics from the perspectives of source-language and direct-manipulation models. They describe the task domain and discuss the pros and cons of direct-manipulation techniques versus a programming-language source code and of a procedural versus declarative schemes. They then establish a framework for analyzing and designing multiple-representation systems. The central theme is that program constructs and visual feedback are complementary to each other and that a hybrid approach would be most desirable.

FolioPub: A Publication Management System ( Johann Schlichter, Leslie Jill Miller ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1988-01)

- A description is given of the major features and architecture of FolioPub, the publication management components of an experimental production publishing system. Focusing on publication definition and automatic publication processing in a distributed environment, FolioPub supports version and access control as well as sequencing of publications through multiple text-processing and image-processing steps. The representation of the publication structure and the processing operations that can be applied to individual objects in the publication structure are discussed. FolioPub also supports requests to print, archive, and restore a publication.

Guest Editor's Introduction: Electronic Publishing Technologies ( Dennis R. Allison ; IEEE Computer Magazine 1988-01)

- No abstract available.
